Choosing Picnic Baskets

| March 12, 2011

The picnic baskets available today range from very simple, traditional designs to extremely complex designs that are designed to hold a variety of equipment, insulate food and provide protection from the elements. Choosing a design isn’t all about practical matters, however. Your personal preferences should play a part in it. The more traditional designs are usually made out of wicker, are square and are designed to be carried in your hands rather than slung like an outdoor pack. The more modern designs feature different materials, bright colors and many of them are made with handles and straps that make them a bit more convenient to carry if you’re walking a long way.

Traditional picnic baskets have never gone out of style. There is something endearing about a wicker picnic basket and they’re perfect for romantic afternoons in the park or at a campground. Because of their materials of manufacture, they do require a bit more care than the more rugged, modern materials. Wicker baskets come in a variety of styles. Some of them are designed to simply carry the food from place to place and others have special sections set aside for silverware, plates, napkins, and, in some cases, even cooking tools such as tongs and spatulas.

If you’re interested in one of the modern picnic baskets on the market, you’ll find plenty to choose from. These designs tend to have the feel of high-end outdoor gear. Many of them feature materials that are very rugged and that can hold up to challenging environments. In both new and traditional designs, many modern picnic baskets are provided with insulation that keeps your cold beverages cold and your hot food hot. Some of the more modern designs also feature closures that are more weatherproof than the traditional wicker basket.

Picnic baskets come in a variety of sizes. If you have a larger family that likes to go out for a picnic now and then, you might want to consider one of the larger designs. If you’re just going out for a romantic afternoon, a two-person picnic basket design is perfect. If picnicking is something you do quite a bit, you may want to consider buying one of the larger, more expensive designs so that you can accommodate the tools and equipment needed for preparing different meals. There are plenty of choices on the market and there’s certainly a design to suit every one.
