Family fun can be had at any price point. Too often people think that family fun needs to consist of visiting a pricey destination or spending a lot of money buying items which are deemed new and hot. However, it’s important to remember that some of the best family fun days cost very little money; the important thing is to spend time having fun together, as a family. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up the occasional expensive weekend visit to a favorite family theme park, but if it’s not realistic to visit it every weekend you can still plan family fun trips to fit your budget. Below are three ideas that are budget and family friendly.
Plan a Picnic
Do you remember when you were a small child and you dreamed of going picnics? Kids love picnics and if you’re looking for something fun and budget-friendly to do as a family then a picnic should be high on your list. There’s something about eating a meal outdoors that makes everyone happy so why not make your family and wallet happy by packing a few picnic baskets and visiting your favorite outdoor spot. Packing picnic baskets or picnic coolers is easy. Your picnic baskets should always include non-breakable plates and cups, plastic works well, and a few forks and napkins. Pick out your favorite meals that your family can easily eat; this is not the time for soup. Instead pack picnic baskets with sandwiches, fruit, precut veggies, crackers and cheese, and other easy food that doesn’t need to be reheated. Picnic coolers keep food cold longer so if you want to pack potato or macaroni salad, and other food that needs to be kept cold, stick to picnic coolers instead of baskets.
Go for a Hike
The great outdoors is always exciting, especially for kids. If you and your family haven’t done so yet then try planning a hike the next time you need to come up with family fun. If you have smaller kids pick a local hike that is easy and short. Bigger kids can go on longer hikes but be sure to have a backpack ready with water, snacks, first aid kit, and your cell phone. Print out a map online, pack the kids into a car, load up on sunscreen, and you’re ready for inexpensive family fun.
Visit a Lake or River
Almost every kid loves a water adventure, but you don’t have to live near the ocean to take advantage of water-based family fun. Local rivers and lakes offer some of the best water access, and your kids will be able to splash around in the water while you relax on shore and keep an eye on them. In fact, you can even pack a few picnic baskets and combine a trip to the lake with a picnic for double the family fun.
