How to Set Up a Game of Kickball for Your Picnic Event

| April 2, 2012

Kickball is a game that has been enjoyed since it was invented in 1917. Your picnic event is sure to be a hit when you spice it up with a game of kickball. What equipment will you need to play the game? How is the game played? Read ahead to learn about this exciting game and how you can turn a picnic into much more than great food and a day in the great outdoors.

Materials Needed

To play kickball, you will need a heavy-duty rubber ball. If you don’t have one already, you can pick one up inexpensively at your local sports store. You will also need four bases. However, if you don’t want to spend a lot on bases, you can always simply use towels or similar items to serve as temporary bases.

Setting Up the Field

Set up the kickball field just as you would a baseball field. Set up four bases with one of the bases designated as the home plate. Also set up boundaries similar to those found in baseball.

How to Play the Game

Divide everyone into two teams. The team that is “up to bat” will take turns kicking the ball that is “pitched” from the pitcher’s mound. The opposing team will need a pitcher and infield and outfield players.

To begin the game, the pitcher will roll the ball toward home plate giving the opposing team player a chance to kick the ball. Players in the field will try to catch the ball or get to it as soon as possible in order to deliver it to one of the basemen in an attempt to get a person out. While the other team is scrambling to get the ball, the kicker tries their best to run around as many bases as possible without being taken out. The next kicker will then step up to the plate and attempt the same thing as his predecessor. When the fielding team gets three outs, it is their turn to “bat.”

Prepare Ahead of Time

If you plan on starting a kickball game at your picnic event, make sure that you give everyone a heads up beforehand. Kickball is a vigorous sport that will require proper sporting attire. Once everyone comes prepared, you will be able to initiate a dynamic, exciting picnic game that will be remembered for a long time.
