Picnics at Zoos or Amusement Parks with Children

| April 27, 2012

Are you planning a trip to the zoo, an amusement park, or other outdoor facility with children? A great way to steer kids away from junk food and to save money is to bring along a picnic lunch. Most kids love to sit on a blanket and share a meal in a different setting. Planning a picnic at such an event will also give you time to rest and become energized enough to face the rest of the day. On that note, most kids need a bit of relaxation time to avoid becoming cranky. Picnics, no matter where they are held, provide the opportunity to recapture you and your children’s energy level.

What to Bring

You may be thinking that dragging a picnic lunch to a zoo or amusement park is more hassle than it’s worth. However, many of these facilities offer lockers to conveniently store such items. Be sure to pack the food in an insulated cooler or picnic basket so all your food items stay fresh. Bring along simple, lightweight items that pack well. For instance, potato salad in a Tupperware container, carrot sticks, and premade sandwiches are all great options. Bring along plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated. Try to stay away from sugary, caffeinated sodas since this will only increase the chances of crabby kids later in the day. Don’t forget to pack napkins and utensils.

You are likely to find a quiet spot where you can set up a blanket and your picnic lunch. It is important to not forget a lightweight blanket that is big enough for everyone to sit on and to rest the food on. If you have young children along with you, this might be a good time for a nap as well.

Keep it Simple

The great thing about picnics at zoos, amusement parks, or similar facilities is that you won’t have to bring much more than food, beverages, and a picnic blanket. You may not even need a blanket since many of these facilities offer picnic benches. Have fun exploring the parks with your children, and then use the picnic as rest time and as a moment to refuel on good food and a private space to get away from the hustle and bustle of the activities. You and everyone else on the excursion will then feel ready to enjoy the rest of the day.
