Preparing for a Picnic on a Hot Summer Day

| May 30, 2012

Summers are the peak time for picnics. Kids are off from school and picnics are a great way to get together with the family to enjoy an afternoon of food and games. If you are planning a picnic for a hot summer day, there are a few pointers that might help you plan an enjoyable event that will keep everyone safe from the heat.

Finding Ways to Cool Off

Having a picnic near a water source is the best way to keep cool during the hottest summer months. Pick out a location near a flowing river, on the ocean or a lake, or near a public or private pool. This will give everyone the opportunity to jump in the water to cool off. If you’re planning a backyard picnic, set up a sprinkler for the kids to run through.

Another great way to cool off is to bring refreshing beverages. Be sure to pack cold beverages in an insulated picnic basket or cooler. Prepare ahead of time by storing frozen bottles or ice packs in the freezer the night before your picnic. Try to stay away from caffeinated, sugary drinks since these will only cause further dehydration. Bring plenty of water, all natural juice, and other beverages that will ensure that everyone stays hydrated for the day.

Protection from the Sun

Even if the sun isn’t out in full force, it is important to wear sunscreen especially during the summer months. Bring along waterproof sunscreen if anyone will be swimming as sun reflecting off the surface of the water can quickly cause sunburns. In addition to sunscreen, pack a large sun umbrella so that you will have a comfortable place to sit under when the sun is at its peak.

Simple Picnic Food Items

When it comes to picnics, it’s best to keep food items simple. Unless you are planning a romantic getaway with gourmet foods, all you will need are sandwich items, fruit, chips, beverages, and other snack items. Plan to bring enough food for a long day.

With all of your plans in place, you and your family and friends will be able to enjoy a relaxing picnic at the beach, park, or any other outdoor environment that you choose. There is no better way to enjoy a summer afternoon than with a picnic that involves the company of those most important to you.
