State Parks are Ideal Picnic Spots

| May 4, 2012

Picnics are an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends. If you are planning a picnic but are unsure of which location to choose for the occasion, you’ll find that you can’t lose when you choose a state park in your area. State parks are protected outdoor areas where nature and wildlife is in abundant supply.

Finding a State Park in Your Area

Most states offer a great variety of state parks to choose from. Your best bet is to perform an Internet search for “state parks” plus the state which you reside. You will then find websites dedicated to describing the state parks near you. Choosing a state park to have a picnic is a great way to get to know your state’s natural areas and to support the efforts of maintaining these areas. Many state parks require a small entrance fee. If you plan on exploring a variety of your state parks this season, it would be worth it to purchase an annual pass that will give you entrance to any park in your state for one year.

Picnic Preparations

Many state parks offer picnic areas in close vicinity to their parking lots. However, if you plan on hiking into the park and then setting up a picnic at a more serene spot, it is a good idea to pack picnic items in a gear bag specifically designed for that purpose. These days, it is easy to find insulated backpack picnic baskets that can be conveniently carried and will ensure that your food stays fresh until you are ready for your picnic. Don’t forget to bring along a blanket or something else to sit on in case the ground is damp. Also bring along sunscreen, bug repellant or other items that will offer protection from the elements. Also be sure to pack plenty of water so that everyone stays hydrated.

Once you have chosen a state park to visit for your picnic, learn more about the park. If the park has a great swimming spot and the season is warm enough for swimming, make sure that everyone wears swimming gear under their clothes. It’s also important that everyone wears appropriate hiking shoes and dresses in layers if the weather is unpredictable. With proper preparation, a picnic at a state park will provide a great experience for everyone involved. Try out a new spot within the park or a new state park every time for an endless array of picnic options.
